Could Virtual World Direct be described as a scam?

There are varying comments about Virtual World Direct and how it may fall into the same category as other MLM schemes and be a scam whereby only the people at the top of the tree make money, from the people at the bottom of the tree paying their weekly fee and advertising the scheme to try and attract other users.

Well if it is a scam, it is working really well for a lot of people - it was set up in April 2002 by Tom Brodie and Len Fitzgerald and continues to be popular.

Unlike many other MLM schemes, you do not have to introduce other people to make money - you can do it by the various syndicate wins on the National Lottery and EuroMillions draws - although admittedly, with the average win being only £40, it does not go far between 49 players in a syndicate.

For those unfamiliar with virtualworlddirect, it is basically an online Lottery syndicate, covering both the main UK Lotto and Euro Millions draws every week. Players who join the eLottery benefit from a massively increased chance of winning compared to playing on their own (winnings are sent out via cheque), and never have to remember to buy their tickets again. For affiliates, it gets even better – You get paid 20% commission on the e-Lottery subscription fees of every player you refer for life.

We haven't paid into the scheme now for quite some while, and still religously earn both commission and winnings, so where is the scam? We can check the syndicate's numbers against each draw every week and if need be there would be the ability to sue the site if they did fail to distribute a big win - but this has not happened (and try searching the internet to find someone who failed to receive their commission or winnings from the site!).

So is it a big scam?

Well we are wholly independent - our contact details are freely available on the rwapsoftware.co.uk website if you want to check. We don't have any other link with VWD other than having joined as an affiliate member. We receive regular payments and just sit back and dream of a big syndicate win.

Basically, so long as you can find 5 other people to sign up to the scheme (hardly a massive number), you can play the National Lottery for free and never have to worry about remembering to buy your ticket (or losing it) again.

We do not spend any money on advertising this - particularly as Google adwords block advertising about gambling sites (although still advertise the National Lottery - we are not quite sure what the difference is here). We have been asked a few times as to whether it is possible to play the National Lottery for free using the Virtual World Direct system, or whether in fact it is a scam.

Well the proof is in the pudding, so they say.

We have managed to refer a number of people to the Virtual World Direct online syndicate site, without needing a great deal of effort. This blog certainly appears to help drive traffic, and we don't do any paid for advertising - we just rely on the search engines finding relevant content on our pages.

Currently we have 41 syndicate members for whom we receive commission each week through the Virtual World Direct system, of which 9 are themselves VWD affiliates. It is interesting that quite a few of the affiliates have not yet taken the opportunity of paying to participate in the lottery themselves, and as they say, you have to be in it to win it.

From that small group of people, we receive on average £181 per month in commission, out of which it is easy to pay the £80 per month we pay for playing in online lottery syndicates (we take part in the National Lottery UK draw syndicate, the EuroMillions draw syndicate, the El Gordo lottery syndicate and the Spanish lottery syndicate), leaving a net profit of around £100 per month.

It is not difficult to refer people to the scheme, when they see the benefits of the multi-win online lottery system and also the opportunity to refer others and play for free, in just the same way as we have (in fact, if they follow our lead, people can make a profit each month!).

But then, the flip side has to be the question as to whether someone finds a benefit from playing in the National Lottery online sydnicates?

Does it increase their chances of winning? A most definite yes - we tend to win at least once every 13 draws
Can they win real money? Yes, your winnings are held on the system and you can easily request a cheque at any time, or payment via Moneybookers.

EuroMillions - Why

When it was announced only last week that a syndicate in Liverpool and a lucky couple in South Wales had shared the top EuroMillions prize of £90 million (£45 million each) - they must have been over the moon. How lovely it would have been to go to work on the Monday, stick your fingers up to the bosses and tell them to stick their jobs - or maybe, just maybe, if you get 6 months full pay when off sick, you might just have to go on extended sick leave due to the stress of winning all that money!!

What would you do in such circumstances?

The other side to the coin is what you do about financial planning and your family. How many people would be expecting to share in your wealth, and if you gave your nearest and dearest even £1 million, would they then think how stingy you were because of the amount you had won? Playing in a syndicate certainly has its advantages in that case! You would also need to think about inheritance tax planning - if you give money away and die within 7 years, the tax man might just grab 40% of it or even the full £45 million if you passed away tomorrow. But then advice on tax planning and investment planning is also expensive - certainly you would not want to go somewhere that was going to charge 5% or more of the amount invested!

I guess in the long term, the best way might be to consider setting up a company which would have the £45 million to invest - it could purchase houses for you and family which were let rent free and then you could hand out shares in the company to friends and family if you wanted to spread your wealth - although again that has its pitfalls around the value of the shares on death, and also Corporation Tax and tax on dividends.

I mean, after having bought houses and cars for yourself, your family (or paid off their mortgages and debts), it would be drop in the ocean compared to the capital - you could expect to earn at least £5000 a day in interest without even trying! What would you do with the rest of the money?

Who knows - we can all but dream of what we would do.... It just reminds me of Brewster's millions, as fast as you could spend, you would be probably earning it back in interest!

Oh well - you have to be in it to win it, so they say... And when I won it I might just have to give some serious thought as to what I was going to do with it.

At least with the EuroMillions, this chance comes up often enough and through being in an online lottery syndicate, you have a much greater chance of winning a prize.

Talking of EuroMillions - I am not sure what they hope to achieve with the increase in the ticket price from £1.50 to £2 - yes, you get a raffle ticket which guarantees to pay one UK player £1million - but I am not sure if everyone wants to pay £2 for a ticket that they never win on.

At least Virtual World Direct has responded to this - you still only pay £5 a week for 36 entries into the Euromillions Draw but now you also get 36 raffle tickets. To pay for this, they have increased the number of people in each sydnicate to 59 which means you get a smaller share of the winnings - however, that has to be worth it, with EuroMillions still being one of the biggest lottery draws over Europe.

I still don't know why they don't expand into the thunderball draw, which gives better odds of winning the top prize. It would seem most suited to an online lottery syndicate scheme, as you could then be guaranteed to match the thunderball at least once every game!

Euromillions £90 million rollover again

Well the EuroMillions has again reached a massive rollover of £90million estimated jackpot. August - A good month for the lottery, not so the weather!

Well, having spent most of August indoors due to the British summer not living up to expectations, we have been hard at work promoting the lottery syndicate and exploring some of its better features.

It has also paid off...

We reduced the entries in the Spanish lottery syndicate to 1 entry as apparently they do not run the monthly draw in August, and used that money to enter another syndicate in the UK lottery.

We matched 3 balls on the UK National Lottery, and through the lottery syndicate method, this meant an extra £614 for our syndicate, plus one more win of £40 in August, we thought this was not too bad going

Add to that the fact that we also won four times on the Euromillions Lottery Draw - two lots of £123 for matching just two of the main balls, and a further £13.80 for matching a single main ball in another 2 draws.

That means a total amount won for our syndicates during August of £913.80, which we would never have achieved entering the lottery draws direct! And this is just for 4 entries in the Virtual World online lottery syndicates

Add to this, £154 received in commission for introducing other players to the online syndicate, and you can easily see how August was a bumper month for us.

Yet another win

Well, several weeks have passed since my last post, and yes, I have received winnings on the National Lottery midweek draw, the EuroMillions draw and the Spanish lottery.

With 49 people in each syndicate, this does eat into your winnings, and commonly the prize ends up being less than £1, but heck, that is more that I ever get when playing the national lottery on my own!

What surprises me is why Virtual World Direct do not offer a syndicate entry into the Thunderball draw - with the Thunderball being between 1-15, they could actually play a syndicate of 15 or 30 players and you would be guaranteed at least one (or two) lines every week with the Thunderball. It would improve the rate you win, and reduce how many people share in the draw, and therefore make the whole thing more appealling.

Well, now that we are in the heart of the recession which has been driven by fuel companies trying to squeeze every last drop out of the economy and the banks which have then realised that they cannot keep lending more than people can afford to pay, maybe now is the time for a reality check.

The petrol companies will continue to use the motorist for profit, unless we boycott the main forecourts and use the cheapest petrol stations - Petrol Prices.com is a useful site to find the best prices in your area. They always find an excuse - the latest excuse for continued price rises, despite the fact that oil is now half the price it was this time last year, is the British weather - with the hot weather, we all drive further, and so demand is up, pushing petrol back above £1 per litre (yes for the yanks moaning about their $2.50 a GALLON, we pay £1 per LITRE!). The dollar exchange rate is another excuse, but they still think the British motorist will continue to pay exhorbitant prices with no alternative. The competition in the market disappeared years ago. With the recession, petrol usage in the UK must have dropped substantially, but do they care whether people can afford to go to work? Not on your nelly!

Gas and Electricity prices continue to be high - with no signs of them returning anywhere near the early 2008 levels - again, the only way the consumer can apply pressure is by constantly checking prices and switching to the cheapest supplier - if we all did this, then it may drive down prices as they might want our custom - USwitch is an invaluable tool here.

It is not all doom and gloom however.

The low exchange rates for the pound mean that whilst imports are a lot more expensive, oversees customers are seeing a significant reduction in the price to them - certainly our own sales have increased substantially to oversees customers - those in the Euro zone have seen an almost 40% reduction in our prices, whilst those in the USA have seen closer to a 50% reduction.
This can be a boon to UK based business if people seize the chance and could even help us to being a producer nation again, as the cost of getting goods made in the UK is becoming more economical. Prices of shipping goods abroad can also be reduced through using couriers such as Parcel2Go.

There might be low interest rates in the UK, although we have gone back to our original bank to make most of it by fixing our mortgage at an all time low of 4.59% fixed for 5 years. I guess the trading history with that bank helped here - we were seen as a lower risk than a new customer. Holidays in the UK are also now more attractive, as people don't get as many euros for their money, and with a long hot summer forecast for the UK, why go abroad, when you can enjoy some of the wonderful UK landscape and help keep the economy going by spending your money here !

I have recently been asked which is the best lottery syndicate to join and to have the best chance of winning.

I have been a member of the syndicate system for over 3 yearrs now and often win, but it is generally small amounts once it has been split between the syndicate players. My largest one-off wins (around £15) have been on the UK National Lottery and yes, I do tend to win every 13 draws.

However, I win more often on the Euromillions draw, although each win tends to only be around 20p - however, I have won larger amounts £3 - £12 more often on this than on the UK National Lottery syndicate.

My EuroMillions winnings through the Virtual World Direct scheme for the last 20 wins are shown on the right (I wonder how many other people trying to get you to sign up to a scheme would be as honest?).

In all, I would say the EuroMillions draw is a better bet, but then of course you only get one draw per week.

Switching between them is easy, although you would need to email VWD support directly to see if you can do it without them keeping another entry protection deposit.

The other option, rather than paying £5 a week for your entry, is of course, to become an affiliate and introduce other people to the scheme - you would get £1 commission per week for each person you introduce, offsetting your own charges (or even giving you a small profit!)

Also don't forget to enter the free £1,000 draw twice a week!

A look back at the credit crunch

With the credit crunch in full swing and as people start worrying about jobs and the recession it all seems doom and gloom. At least the National Lottery offers some chance of escaping from it all, and our fellow affiliates for the scheme have reported a rising number of people subscribing to the Virtual World online lottery syndicates - hoping that they will win the big one.

I guess that £5 a week is no big sum for 44 chances on the National Lottery is neither here nor there for many people - what is it, two pints of beer down your local (if it is still open), and less than going to the cinema to watch Slumdog Millionaire (this year's feel good movie - well worth watching by the way). At least now you can join more than one syndicate at a time through the Virtual World online lottery syndicate scheme so this makes it even more attractive, as you can have an entry for your partner as well without having to become an affiliate.

Remember, somewhere it is written that you will win (or so it says in Slumdog Millionaire) - we may not have the same levels of poverty here in the UK as in Mumbai, but we still have plenty of people wanting to escape from their real lives...

Oh well a night in with Sky TV looks like a better bet for a better escape. One of the biggest problems in the past is that although the online lottery synidcate system allows you a great way of playing in a large syndicate to get lots of entries in the UK National Lottery lotto and EuroMillions draws, you could only ever play in one syndicate for each draw.

They have now rectified this, and you can play in multiple synidcates, by choosing how many you wish to subscribe to each week. This is ideal, especially as the £26m super Euromillions draw is due to happen tonight.

We have increased the number of syndicates we subscribe to for this draw, and will then reduce them next week to a more affordable level.

Well, last night was a bit of a disappointment, I had purchased a EuroMillions lottery ticket from the local Tescos and my partner had entered a syndicate at work - so that was a total of 8 goes on the lottery between us.

Get the results this morning and lo and behold, although we matched two numbers on one line, there were no winning tickets..... What a shame..

On the other hand, the postman delivered a cheque from Virtual World Direct for £80.50 in commission from referring others and this morning I log on to find that my online lottery syndicate also won in last night's draw - only £7.20, but heck that's better than nothing.

Well we must admit, having done so well in the first five months of the year, it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride at home, with ever increasing fuel prices and gas & electricity prices, we need to do something to keep the home fires burning.

At least we may not win the lottery, but we continue expanding our wins on the online syndicate's mutli-win system provided by Virtual World Direct, as well as earning some healthy commission - all that and we are playing the lottery for free !!

Looking back over the first 5 months of 2008, we were astounded to see the increased levels of activity in our Virtual World Direct online lottery syndicate scheme.

Since January, out syndicate has won a total of 9 times on the weekly Euromillions draw (worth £872.60) and a further 6 times on the twice weekly UK National Lottery Draw (bringing in another £240).

Wahey - I've had a bit of good news yet - not enough to let me give up work and retire, but I won my biggest win so far on last night's EuroMillions draw - the syndicate won a total of £811.60 for matching 3 balls.

All I need now is to win again tonight and it will cover my fuel bills for the week! Blimey, with the price of petrol I do wonder if its worth going to work sometimes - I'm currently spending £200+ a month on fuel - anyone got some better ideas (a bike is out of the question, as I'm 15 miles away from work)

Building up your online business

Well, 2008 has seen a good start to our online lottery syndicate (despite the downturn in the world economy). We have recruited 8 new people to our syndicate since the start of the year and are getting regular enquiries. Not only are we now playing both the UK National Lottery and the EuroMillions Draw for free, but we are also now earning a steady £11 extra per week in commission.

We have been using two important tools to promote our online business and have been pleasantly surprised by how effective they have proved.

The main driver is probably this blog, which is syndicated across several sites making it easier to find and drive people to our website. However, a new angle this year has been to start advertising on Facebook, where the ads can be targetted and you can pay around 34 cents for someone clicking on your advert, which makes it highly cost effective.

It will be interesting to see how this year pans out for our syndicate, but the outlook is good so far!

The National Lottery loves to promote a winning syndicate team - especially when it can have a massive impact on a business - imagine all of your finance and payroll staff winning the lottery one Saturday, to find that by Tuesday, you have no-one to pay your suppliers or more importantly your remaining staff !!

It's a wonder the insurance companies have not caught onto this and offered all business insurance cover for this eventuality. Mind you the odds against it happening are so horrendous, it would be an excellent money making opportunity for insurers!

On the other hand, how many staff would love the opportunity to stick two fingers up to their bosses when on Monday morning a whole department turn up just to hand their notice in and then go down the pub to celebrate?

I remember one lottery syndicate which was run within a legal firm I used to work for - there were 20 players in the syndicate, basically all of the support staff and one or two solicitors. Even with that support over 2 1/2 years, I think we won a grand total of about £60 (or £3 each).

Had I known about Virtual World Direct's Online Lottery Syndicate I would have recommended that we use the £20 per week to sign up with VWD - after paying £4.99 to become an affiliate, plus £5pw, the first person could introduce 3 others each paying £5pw. All four would be the trustees for the office Lottery Syndicate and for an outlay of the same £20pw, the office syndicate would no longer receive just 20 lines on the Saturday lottery draw, but actually receive 176 lines on both the Wednesday and Saturday lottos, plus getting £3 back per week in affiliate fees.

Suddenly the dreams of sticking it to the bosses seem a whole lot nearer, with a total of 352 lines per week on the lottery, this is equivalent to the office lottery playing over 17 weeks.

An interesting concept indeed - now all we need is to find 20 willing volunteers at work....

Well I was surprised today to spot online a typical diet advert "Lose 10 pounds in a week" - it must be wonderful to see these adverts and think, yeah I need to lose 10 pounds, I'm sure that will help - after all they are advertising on Google.

Well I can show you quite easily how to lose 10 pounds in a week, without any need for exercise or changing your diet - simply send £10 by PayPal to me.

Hang on - surely there's a catch??

Well no, if you do this you will definitely lose 10 pounds in a day, let alone a week!
Actually we are not talking of 10 pounds in weight, but 10 pounds in money. Should teach you to read the terms and conditions beforehand and make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money.

At least with the Virtual World Direct's Online Lottery Syndicate scheme you know precisely that - for your 10 pounds a week, you are given the two sets of lottery numbers which you will be playing and can check them against the National Lottery midweek and Saturday draws (shown on TV) and against the National Lottery Euromillions Draw numbers on a Friday night.

As we reach the end of 2007, we have decided to look back at the year and see whether Virtual World Direct has been worth the effort of marketing, writing this blog and promoting our own lottery syndicate.

Well, throughout the year, we have played on both the UK's National Lottery Syndicate and the EuroMillions draw syndicate at the princely sum of £10 per week to cover entries in the three draws per week.

We have received a commission cheque for the year, totalling £62.50, and have also won £41.30 during 2007. Against this, we have had to pay out £107.34 in entry fees (the rest of the fees were deducted from commission earned). Overall for 2007, we have therefore made a net loss of £3.54 - hardly anything to write home about, and have had the chance of winning a lot more money tax free.

We have introduced 115 people to the scheme and have a downline of 10 people playing underneath us on a regular basis.

Overall, the system appears to be working - it is not as easy to promote as we would have hoped, but then a quick look at ebay shows just how many people are trying to promote the scheme on there in the hopes of building their own downline and earning enough commission each week in order to play the lottery for free.

We will look again at our methods of promotion and whether there is anything better we can do. We would welcome comments from people who have successfully introduced others to Virtual World Direct's Online Lottery Syndicate scheme and hopefully we can share ideas.

We are (nearly) managing 49 entries per week into the two UK National Lotto draws and 41 entries per week into the National Lottery EuroMillions draw, effectively for free. We are also building a business out of this, with more and more people being introduced via our website and blog. Give it another 12 months and we should hopefully see positive returns out of this.

Fingers crossed we can do better next year !

Saving The Planet (or maybe just money?)

We have long promoted the benefits of working to benefit the planet - we have worked for many years with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, undertaking practical conservation tasks, up to our armpits in mud building a footpath, or even breaking the ice on a pond in the winter to do some pond clearance in the middle of a snow-storm.

For the saner amongst us out there, you really should look to save energy. Leaving appliances on standby is one of the major culprits with many televisions using over 10% of their normal power just to keep you from having to cross the room to press the on/off switch. With the advent of digital TV, this is made worse, as many set top boxes use almost as much power on standby as when being used !!

We have found an excellent little gadget - the "Bye Bye Standby" which comes as a set of plugs which can be operated remotely using wireless technology - you can either turn them off individually or as part of a group. Ideal for switching off the sky box downstairs on a night after watching a film on the upstairs TV !! This is not too pricey and we have even found that the cheapest place to purchase Bye Bye Standby is Tesco Direct. With a starter kit consisting of one remote control and 3 remote plugs, this was simple to install and should save some money in the first six months.

Now all we need is someone to offer us a solar heating system - now that would be excellent, particularly as we have a south facing roof. However, it is hard to justify over £4,000 for such a system, even if it might help save the planet.

Time to Take Stock

OK, we have been trying out this lottery scheme now for a while - and yes it is working for us - we have had a few wins over the months, although nothing to write home about alas - mind you it is nice to log onto Virtual World Direct every once in a while and see the number of people who are checking out the site having read our website or blog (thanks). It is also nice to see that we do sometimes win (unlike playing on the lottery on your own, where you are lucky to win £10 a year!!).

In fact we have introduced 111 people to the site and our syndicate has won £1050 on the EuroMillions Draw since April, but only £320 on the National Lottery draw.

I guess it is a bit like the other much better known social networking sites, such as Avon, which has proved a successful business model over the years, but does really rely on you referring other people to sign up with them in order to achieve better earnings. Surprising really that most of the people we introduce only join up as Players and not as affiliates - maybe they don't want to try and earn free entries into the lottery.

We have had a look at the new scheme which Virtual World Direct are offering - uVme and we must admit that we are confused as to what exactly it offers. It appears to be a social networking site where you can play games against other members and maybe win some money, but unlike Facebook and Faceparty, you have to pay to join the site and earn money for introducing others. Seems as though this is not well thought out - I cannot see the site appealing to many people and it is expensive to join.
